In paper production, titanium dioxide is used to improve the opacity of the paper. Be it to prevent the print from showing through on the reverse side or to cover a differently coloured subsurface in white.
Titanium dioxide is much in demand as a pigment particularly for the production of decorative papers, as decorative papers require pigments which are particularly light resistant and prevent the greying of the paper. But titanium dioxide is also frequently used in paper coating paints. The high degree of brightness and hiding power mean that titanium dioxide pigments cannot be replaced by any other commercial white pigment without a loss of quality.
